Although Slovakia ranks first in the total entrepreneurial activity in V4 and Europe, it
ranks first in entrepreneurship discontinuance as well; 7% of adult population
discontinues their businesses. In addition, Slovakia leads in fatal discontinuance of
businesses with 4.5% of adult population and is 2
nd
in Europe (behind Bosnia and
Herzegovina) in temporary discontinuance of businesses with 2.5% of adult
population. The most common reason for the business discontinuance, in more than
33% of all cases, is that businesses were not making profit.
One of the factors explaining Slovakia’s high TEA is the number of so-called restarted
entrepreneurs. 13.9% out of all the early-stage entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs, who
terminated one business and started a new one within last twelve months.
From the regional point of view, Slovakia’s TEA is the highest in Bratislava region
(16.8%), paradoxically there is relatively enough job opportunities for employment.
Above average Slovakia’s TEA is also in Prešov region (15.8%), Trenčín region
(15.5%) and Žilina region (15.2%). Average Slovakia’s TEA is in Banská Bystrica
region (14.2%) and below average Slovakia’s TEA is in Nitra region (13.0%), Trnava
and Košice region (both 11.3%).
Entrepreneurial employee activity - EEA in Slovakia is below European average.
Within the last three years, 6.5% of adult population was involved in entrepreneurial
activity of employer; this puts Slovakia in the 3
rd
place among V4 countries and 18
th
place among European countries. From the 6.5% of adult population involved in
entrepreneurial activity of employer within the last three years, only 2.7% of adult
population is involved in present; this puts Slovakia in the 2
nd
place among V4
countries and 16
th
place among European countries.
According to GEM’s three dimensions typology of entrepreneurial activity, Slovakia
is an A type country, it is a country with high entrepreneurial activity in measured
dimensions - job creation (self-employment included) and entrepreneurial employee
activity. There are very heterogeneous countries in the A type country group -
Argentina, Australia, Chile, Netherland, Latvia, Slovakia, USA and Uruguay. There
are three European countries and two countries from the former Eastern Bloc.
