Entrepreneurial Activity Profile in Slovakia
Entrepreneurial activity profile in Slovakia is measured by three social characteristics
- gender, age, education as well as by the entrepreneurship’s industry. It is unbalanced
in several aspects and low in international comparison.
Slovakia has a low ration of women in entrepreneurship and it is both in the early-
stage of entrepreneurship as well as in established businesses (both 29%). It is below
European as well as global average.
Regarding the age, the highest TEA in Slovakia is in the 33 - 54 years, age category
(19.3%). Above average in TEA in Slovakia are also age categories 18 - 24 (14.4%)
and 25 - 34 (18.4%). All three of these age categories are above World’s, European
and V4 average and are at the average level of other countries with efficiency-driven
economies. On the other hand, the TEA of the oldest age category, 55 - 64 years, is
only 4.7% of adult population. This age category contributes the least to Slovakia’s
TEA (5.6%), this is deeply below average in Europe (10%), World (9.2%), V4 (7.8%)
as well as in the other countries with efficiency-driven economies (7.4%).
22.5% of the university graduates are involved in TEA of Slovakia; nevertheless, most
(46.5%) of the early stage entrepreneurs have high-school education.
Regarding the industry in Slovakia, at early-stage entrepreneurs and established ones
services for end customers (42.5%, 36.1% respectively) and construction,
manufacturing, transportation, communication, utilities, and wholesale (37.3%, 42.4%
respectively) are dominant. The next industries in the early-stage businesses as well as
in established businesses are business services (20%, 1.4% respectively) and
agriculture, mining, (17.7%, 2.6% respectively). This statistics shows that there is
positive shift of industry profile in Slovakia towards services for customers as well as
businesses at early stage entrepreneurial activity. If this trend continues, industry
profile of Slovak entrepreneurs would be more similar to the countries with
innovation-driven economies.
Entrepreneurial Aspirations in Slovakia
